How to make brown sugar

It happens, right? While collecting your cooking ingredients to make your favorite baked goods and dum, dum, dum…. no brown sugar. Luckily, making brown sugar is about as easy as it gets. Now that I’ve done it this way over the last decade, I’m not sure I could buy one of those bags of brown sugar in the grocery store.

How to make brown sugar

Now get ready for this. The whole process of making brown sugar is just adding molasses to sugar. That’s it. If you really want a recipe, start by adding a tablespoon to two cups of sugar. 

I used to measure the sugar and molasses for this recipe, but if you’ve ever worked with molasses, it is a sticky and slow ingredient to work with. First, put granulated sugar in the mixer and turn it on low. Then pour molasses into the mixer a little at a time. You can adjust to a darker or lighter version by adjusting the amount of molasses you add. If you want a lighter brown sugar? Add a little molasses. If you want a darker brown sugar? Add more molasses. When it’s well mixed, you’re done. Store it in an air-tight container and enjoy!

I like it, particularly because Brer Rabbit is a quality unsulfured juice of sun-ripened sugarcane and contains no preservatives, artificial flavor, or artificial color. It comes in three grades: mild flavor, full flavor, and blackstrap. 

Tips and Tricks

Although this recipe is about as easy as it gets – believe it or not, I have made some mistakes. For example, ensure the amount of sugar you put in the mixer fits in your storage container. Also, the sugar mixes easier if the mixer bowl is not totally full. 

Store it in an air-tight container and enjoy!
