Hi from the Gardening Passion

We’ve ESCAPED! The burbs, that is…

Hi, and welcome! I’m Lola from The Gardening Passion. Like many, I carry around a gardening passion that has only grown over the decades.

A hidden treasure trove of fuits, vegetable, herbs, and eggs in a suburban neighhborhoods’ backyard.

I’ve built and planted four gardens from scratch. The Community Oasis Garden was a community garden plot. The Gardening Passion Expands garden and the Quick Turn Garden, were both suburban backyard gardens. And finally, The Empty Nest Garden is our new garden here on this blank slate in New Hampshire.

The Suburbs

We were outliers in the suburbs with such a big garden and chickens. But, despite being outliers, we did our best to maximize our property’s potential with our backyard gardens; we preserved fruits, veggies, and herbs. And then there are the chickens, of course, all hidden within a backyard of a typical neighborhood.

The Gardening Passion – Our “why”

We get immense satisfaction (and general relief) from knowing how to care for ourselves. To say our contemporaries in the suburbs didn’t understand us might be an understatement. After all, having a trailer full of horse manure delivered to your yard every fall is not very normal. Neither is harvesting chickens in the backyard or growing and canning garden produce. I had a gardening passion that was all-consuming – which isn’t very common in the suburbs.

While we raised our kids in the suburbs, we never really fit into the lifestyle of the suburbs. But ya know, you go where the work is, and my husband’s career was in Boston. So you do what you can where you are planted – pun intended.

Not a hardcore homesteader

Don’t get me wrong; we’re not going full-blown self-sufficient here…. modern conveniences are just too sweet to give up. After all, we love eating out as much as the next person. Ordering online and having our purchases delivered by truck (not airplane); it really is the way to go. And easily seeing a doctor whenever needed is an enormous bonus we’re not willing to give up. However, everyone has their sweet spot, and I believe we’ve found ours.

So welcome! Read on to join us as we beat back the wilds of this property. We’ve begun building yet another garden called The Empty Nest Garden.
