How to Separate Dahlia Seeds

separate dahlia seeds

When your brother hands you a baggie of seeds… well, you plant them, of course. After such a successful germination, I texted him. “Hey, any idea what varieties or colors these dahlias might be?” I got back one word: “Multi.” He’s not what you would call a ‘texter’. So, these will be my mystery plants for the season. How exciting! But first, I need to separate the dahlia seeds from the flower petals.

How to separate dahlia seeds

When I first dumped the baggie of seeds into a bowl, what a mess! Picking them out one by one would take forever! Luckily, the process of separating the dahlia seeds from the dried flower parts is crazy easy. First, gently rub the material between your hands repeatedly to separate the flower from the seeds.

The breeze will do the heavy lifting

If there is a light breeze, this job is even easier. Take your seed and flower mix outside into a large, deep, light bowl. While gently blowing on the seeds, also shake the bowl in a round motion as if you are mining for gold.

The flower bits will gently shake out to the top where you’re blowing, and the breeze will carry them out of the bowl. The mature seeds are heavier and will stay a the bottom, assuming you don’t blow too hard!
